Standing in front of the door that led to the 'laboratory', Eli stared at it with apprehension, not yet mustering the courage to knock. The Cold Place, as he had taken to referring it, had been a 'lab', he could remember the humans saying from time to time, but this didn't seem to be the same sort of place. At least, he hoped it wasn't. The humans that he had seen on the streets here, so far...they were nice. Nothing like the others.
And he had seen quite a few of them on his hurried trek to the town. Each time he had managed to run for a short distance before collapsing or having to fall back into a walk, and many of those times, one person or another had stopped to make sure he was alright. Well, it seemed like that, at least, especially since up until the Cold Place, Eli hadn't had any contact with the humans...and now they were everywhere.
He missed his family. But how could he have even begun trying to find them? He hadn't recognized where he was at all when getting out of the Cold Place, and even if he had managed to find him...what would they think of him? He looked sadly down at the fingers on his hand, stretching them out their full distances, and at the little claws at the end of each one. That was only one of the changes brought upon by the humans, but even that would have been enough to get him all but shunned from the family. They wouldn't want anything to do with him... He sighed, the exhale accompanied by a faint whistling noise. At least that was the same.
So far, he could think of few things that made anything worthwhile. The major one, to him, was the fact that he was standing in front of the lab door, not cold at all. In fact, he rather liked that one; it seemed that humans had one advantage over Pokémon - they wore all this warm clothing. He fingered the faded red scarf around his neck, recalling the little female human that had given it to him during one of his stops, as well as the older human that had presented his now-treasured hat and sweater. Yes, clothing was definitely a plus, and he liked having more than sweatpants - what the humans in the Cold Place had given him.
But clothing still didn't feel as good as the warmth...
He shook his head, bringing himself out of his few, faint memories before he could finish the thought. No, he didn't want to remember the Charmander right now. It would only lead into everything else that he wanted to forget about.
More as a distraction than anything else, Eli raised his hand and, balling it into a loose fist, as he had seen another human do at a different door, knocked.
