personality.[/i]. Though she's cheerful and wouldn't think twice about walking up to a complete stranger, throwing her arm around their shoulders and offering to be their best friend, she has her dark sides. This girl's got an attitude, and she's not afraid to use it. Marley isn't afraid of much save for a few almost irrational fears; deep, dark water for one. Marley will not swim in water where she cannot see the bottom, lake or ocean. Not even she knows where this phobia originated, but she namely keeps it to herself.
Despite her friendly, take-on-the-world-or-leave-it-behind outlook on life, she's not without her flaws; Marley has somewhat of a superiority complex which originates from growing up in a family where her older siblings gave her anything she wanted, not to mention being able to practically point at anything she liked and get it. She's ambitious, yes, but not an airhead; Hans didn't raise no fool. Marley was taught to appreciate everything she had, and it can be assumed she does, but no one could weed her get-what-i-want-when-i-want-it mindset from her head. She's accustomed to working for what she wants, and if she doesn't succeed, she most likely will cuss impressively in German and then try again until she gets it.
Because her adopted father was homosexual, she grew up completely ignorant to the possibilities of heterosexuality. I kid you not, Marley is a bit baffled as to why the majority of humankind pairs up with the opposite sex and not the other way around, and as such, it makes her appear somewhat naive to the ways of the world. She's more readily open to females as opposed to males, and won't hesitate to compliment either sex if she feels one is in order.
Her readiness for physical affection of any sort, be it a hug or just a simple act of linking her arm with another, can be alarming to some, and she doesn't always realize what she's doing before whoever she's with either rejects her contact or becomes flustered with her attempts.
Sweet as she may be, Marley has her moments when anger takes over; she has a tendency of swearing colorfully in German if she commits an act of clumsiness, such as dropping something heavy on her own foot, but she also won't hesitate to turn her snappish tongue on people or Pokémon if she's angry enough. In her case, mercifully, this doesn't happen often because her tirades are something to marvel at. Some say it's her mother's blood in her, but it's not as if she'd ever find out.
Somewhere deep down, Marley is maybe just a little bitter at never meeting nor knowing her mother, because she lacked the mother-daughter relationship some kids could brag (or even complain) about; that, and she could never quite force her father to relive that fateful day when she made her initial discovery of puberty ("Vati, did somebody put red paint in my undies?") In those regards, she lacks the experience of what having a mother must be like, but she can't possibly miss it, having never known what it was like. Her foster mothers never quite had the individual time for her, nor was she old enough to realize to miss her temporary mommies.
Marley's adoration for music is impressive, and some speculate that's where her nickname originated (after the reggae musician Bob Marley); the shiny turquoise custom-made headphones are her most prized object, and high in the price range, because they act something like a futuristic iPod, sans the annoying, flimsy earbuds and screen. She'll listen to nearly anything and everything save for rap (which in her opinion is not even real music), and sappy lovesongs, and has quite a pleasant voice when and if she decides to belt out lyrics to her favorites, despite being just the slightest bit self-conscious if she receives odd stares or applause for her performances.
As a last addition, Marley has somewhat of a flair in bringing even the shyest people out of their shells; this girl doesn't know the meaning of 'awkward'. Her modesty levels are low, and she doesn't mind awkward silences in the least. In fact, she'll keep up a one-way conversation for hours until she's told to shut the hell up. [/ul]
background.
Shortly after, the baby was transferred to the NICU for care, and the mother wheeled to a room to recuperate from the emergency surgery; there was little the doctors could do. After battling her sickness for so long, the shock and circumstances surrounding baby Isabelle's birth were too much; the mother passed away in the wee hours of the night, orphaning her premature child into the world.
Social services didn't take long to locate a suitable foster home in Agate Village, and as soon as the baby was strong enough to travel, she was transported to her new family. She was a bright baby, full of giggles and with an attitude that even at an early age showed through; once she was old enough to take her first tottering steps, and utter a few garbled words, she was again transferred, this time to a family in the region of Hoenn, in the beautiful canal city of Altomare. This time, baby Isabelle gained her first glimpse of Pokémon, creatures that had been scarce at best in Orre. Now she could toddle with unsteady feet after the family's pets, an Arcanine and a Vaporeon, testing both of their patiences as far as they could reach. She demanded rides from the fiery canine, which he gave with unbelievable glee, and once she was old enough, splashed about in a kiddie pool with the Water-type.
All good things come to an end sometime, but in her case, they only got better. Several adoption applications, interviews, and meetings with strangers later she was bawling goodbye to her old family and greeted by a permanent one, her new daddy, Hans Vogel Fegefeuer, and his twin sons from a previous marriage gone awry, Alexis and Emil. For Hans, money wasn't much an object; he'd waited a good while to adopt a daughter. Unfortunately, most adoption agencies didn't agree with a gay man adopting a child. It was a painstaking and sometimes humiliating process at best, but the man had an excellent reputation, and he was responsible with his twin sons enough to take on the five-year-old toddler. Thus, our little girl relocated again, this time to the famous Alamos Town in the region of Sinnoh.
In her new home, Marley rarely missed anything. She was given every comfort a spunky girl of her age could ask for, if not more. Her daddy had money, yes, and she could ask for anything she wanted and most likely get it. Oh, she adored her new life; she had twin brothers who practically worshiped her, and a daddy, who, unlike her old daddy, seemed to like spending time with men rather than ladies. She was curious about that, curious enough to one day walk up to him and tug on his sleeve with her seven-year-old's small hand.
"Vati, if I liked girls, would that be the same as you liking boys?"
She asked this with a serious expression, staring up at her father with large honey-chocolate eyes, as if she was intent on sitting there until she received an answer. What she didn't notice was the baffled expression settling on Hans' features, as if the man didn't quite know what to think. "..well, I... I don't really.." Eventually he cleared his throat and smiled, hugging the little girl close and murmured into her ear, "..listen, you do whatever you think is right, Liebling. You'll always be my baby girl, and I'm proud to be your Vati no matter what."
When she hit ten years of age, Marley was again forced to cry goodbyes; her brothers Alexis and Emil were both sixteen, and had long since put off their own Pokémon journeys. Instead of traveling to Sandgem Town, Hans had purchased them each a companion from a trusted and well-known breeder. Marley had played with Alexis' Houndour and Emil's Shinx enough to feel a longing to receive her own Pokémon and leave home for a journey. She'd played out the day in her mind often enough, but even she knew she was far too young to safely travel the country. Still, it didn't stop her from playing out mock battles with her Poképlushies, often ending in bloody triumphs over far stronger creatures and lasting long into the night.
Postcards and phone calls were never scarce, because even hundreds of miles away, Alexis and Emil hadn't lost their adoration for their little sister; she was up to date with trends and the status of each and every one of her adopted brothers' feats, but even as she aged, the phone calls became less, and she only received perhaps one letter a month. By the time she was fifteen, Marley was more preoccupied with finally getting the opportunity to pick out her own Pokémon from the breeder's extensive collection. She already knew what she wanted.
Alamos Town was huge even without the imposing Space-Time Towers dominating the scene; Marley had several friends, some of whom nurtured the same desires she did, but none of whom wanted to leave the region itself. Even so, few of them already had a Pokémon, and their games centered around chasing wild Pokémon in the gardens, or climbing the thousand-step stairs of the Space-Time Towers and settling on watching the clouds when they got too tired to go further.
Marley alone wanted to see what was beyond the horizon. She refused to settle for the monotony of fire, grass, and water. She didn't want to be one of a million who'd chosen Chimchar, Turtwig, or Piplup and droned about the region for badges. No, she wanted something much more.
Even so, she thought of her brothers fondly, smiling at photos they'd sent of the places they'd been, the Pokémon they'd caught, and their own Houndour and Shinx respectively, now grown and blossomed into a massive, muscular Houndoom and a fearsome Luxray. She wanted both on her own future team, some day. Her heart was elsewhere, however. Sweet and innocent as she may have appeared, she wanted raw power.
"Vati, Vati, herkommen!" she cried excitedly, clinging to the scaly mass of jaws and brilliant blue and yellow; the creature was gurgling something as it snapped massive jaws and formidable teeth in a friendly way; at least, that's what it seemed. Hans wasn't so certain about it. "Er.. Liebling, are you quite sure? I mean, he looks a bit mean."
The baby dragon crooned curiously, tilting his head as Marley stood, planting her hands on her hips and gazing sternly at her father. "Vati, just look at him, he's so innocent, and how could you possibly say thaaaaaat? Bitte!"
In the end, Marley brought home the fledgling Gible, jaws and all; in the coming months, her father would not take kindly to destroyed and chewed furniture, but dealt with it only as a loving father could ▬ with never-ending patience. While she raised the infant dragon and prepared for a tour around Sinnoh, her father prepared for her departure in his own way; watching his adopted daughter grow up.
Eventually, the dreaded day came.
"Ach, Liebling... I'll miss you so much. Call often, but don't forget to have fun. I want to hear everything!"
"Of course, Vati, and don't fret. I'll be home before you know it. Auf Wiedersehen!"
Sure, it wasn't her intended route. She was just... getting a preliminary taste, that was all. She trained her Gible diligently, watching him grow stronger with every passing day; weeks went by and she captured a Staravia, and defeated Gardenia, earning her second badge. By the time she reached Pastoria City, she'd raised a team of four; her Gible had evolved into a Gabite, the Staravia had long since become a Staraptor, and she'd also captured and trained a Nidorino and a very obstinate Grumpig.
After defeating Crasher Wake, Marley returned home with her troupe, already bored with the monotony of the gym run. It was too familiar. Her father was happy to see her home, but Marley's listlessness was too hard to watch; the girl wandered Alamos Town with her Gabite in tow, spending most of her days sitting at the edge of the bridge leading out of Alamos and wondering just what there was to do now.
A flier laying on the ground beside her caught her attention then, and for lack of anything more interesting to do, she picked it up and scanned it quickly; within seconds, her eyes widened in ecstasy and she raced home to show it to her father.
"...you're not gonna back down from this, are you? Hans finally sighed from where he sat on the couch, watching his daughter fidgeting anxiously beside her Gabite; the shark-dragon was unconcernedly grooming a fin, seemingly uninterested in the conversation. Marley nodded, her arms crossed over her chest and biting her lower lip almost nervously as her father considered.
At last, she was on her way to Kairuu; her Gabite was asleep on the seat beside her, snoring contentedly at having gotten his way and scared even the conductor enough with his yellow gaze to not have his choice of seat disputed. After a long, hard conversation with her father, Marley had at last acquired the necessary tickets and money to head to the Kairuu Region.
She didn't know what was ahead, but she'd take that in stride. After all, she had her Gabite with her and that was all that counted. Having decided that she wouldn't be making a true fresh start, she'd left her Staraptor, Nidorino, and Grumpig at home in her father's care, and brought only her Gabite whom she could possibly not leave. Either that or he would've followed her anyway.
Who knew what she'd face?[/ul]
