and a fulcrum on which to place it
Appearance:
Nicholai takes after his mother in many aspects, most notably in height. Where his father has a stocky build Nicholai is much taller at six feet and one inch. His brother Jean is a couple inches taller with his mother two inches shorter and his father a full six inches below him. Due to his years working as a dock hand, Nicholai has kept his body lean and fat free, unlike a certain local gym leader. Since he doesn’t weight train or work out, his muscles come solely from work, bringing his weight in at 186 pounds. His upper body is pronounced when you can see it without clothing, but it doesn’t show through his clothes noticeably. Nicholai may be in good shape and all, but he lacks the bulging biceps of most of the sailors. He also has a healthy tan from working out in the sun and occasionally working without a shirt when it gets hot and he needs to cool off.
Unlike many of the sailors, Nicholai doesn’t have buzzed down hair. He instead opts to keep it at a medium length which is still short in its own right. The easiest thing for Nicholai to do is to just slick his hair back over his hair. That way when he’s sweating on the job he can just run his hands back through his hair and it doesn’t mess up anything. His hairstyle is reminiscent of surfers more than anything, though Nicholai has never taken up the sport. His eyes don’t stand out due to their hazel hue and blend in with the rest of his tan face and brown hair. Nicholai’s face is long and slender, a trait he picks up from his mother’s French side of the family. Along with this he also has a straight and narrow nose, adding to the supple structure of his face. Despite his brother and father both sporting prominent beards, Nicholai has never grown facial hair successfully.
Nicholai doesn’t dress that impressively since he feels he doesn’t have to in his line of work. Almost always he wears a white shirt, whether or not he’s wearing something over it. In summer months a white t-shirt is usually the only shirt he wears, but in the fall and winter months he puts on another layer. He has several waterproof jackets with high neck, which really comes in handy when you’re getting splashed all the time. His favorite jacket is a navy blue one for no particular reason; he just likes the color on the jacket. Aiding further in keeping himself dry, Nicholai wears waterproof pants when working on the docks and ships. Away from the water though he wears cargo pants and jeans, whichever he’s in the mood for. Whether on the job or in town, Nicholai wears a pair of low top boots. They are sturdy enough to take a beating on the job and can get wet, though he doesn’t like doing so, but they also function as regular boots.
Personality:
You would think that with his environment Nicholai would be your typical rough and tough sailor type, there is much more behind him. First off, he’s probably one of the nicest guys working at the docks. A lot of the other workers grumble about the hard work and try to avoid doing extra. Nicholai sees it through different eyes and wants to do as much work as possible, asking captains and crews if there is anything else they might need. Part of this is because he’s a nice guy, but more than anything he’s working the ships. If he comes across as willingly helpful and kind, sometimes he gets a little extra payment or a gift. He wouldn’t have half the things he owns if it weren’t for these bonuses.[/font]
Unlike most people Nicholai really loves his job and the work involved in it. He gladly does manual labor that others would shirk and groan at. There is a rather simple reason behind why he likes to do this kind of work and it’s because of the reward. When Nicholai loads a ship, he can see with own eyes the progress he’s made. So even if the work is backbreaking, he will gladly do it knowing how good it will feel to finish the job. What’s more is that he insists on doing as much of the work as possible. This doesn’t mean he’s trying to steal the other workers crates. He has a deep dislike for several of the machines for various purposes on the docks like loading ships and pulling ships into their loading space. Nicholai firmly believes that some work should just be done the old fashioned way if any value of hard work is to be kept. Since his brother Jean works with the machinery on ships and occasionally the docks, the two are always debating over which method is better overall.
Something that came away from his job at the docks is that Nicholai is very organized. When your job is to load a ship as fast and efficiently as possible, you can’t help but have that mindset trickle over into your personal habits. Everything in his room is sorted by categories such as where the item is from or even its color. As a result there is a lot of open space in his room since he knows how to stack and store everything as efficiently as possible. Nicholai can also look at a mess or storage area and instantly see where and how everything should go.
His organizational skills don’t make Nicholai a prude though as he likes to hang out with the guys for a good time. He is very much at home at the local bar scenes and he’s there a lot. That tends to happen when everyone you know is there anyway. Initially when he gets there he’s the straight guy making sure no one is fighting and everyone is having a good time. Most nights he keeps up this attitude and remains the one sober guy at the entire bar, but not always. On occasion he’ll be given the night off and allowed to indulge in the drink and though hesitant at first gives in eventually. Once that first drink goes down it’s quickly followed by more until Nicholai is good and drunk. To everyone else’s enjoyment, Nicholai is happy drunk beyond belief. He starts dancing instead of walking, speaking everything on his mind, and best of all hitting on all the ladies. Sober, Nicholai is courteous to the any women but once he gets drunk he becomes the comedic funny guy. He makes jokes, tells stories, funny faces, and even the whoopee cushion material, all of it leaving the ladies in stitches. It’s not uncommon for Nicholai to wake up the next morning with a woman wrapped around him or better, several women.
Drinking and getting drunk are relatively rare for Nicholai and not his normal demeanor. Still, he’s a happy and laid back person anyway and who could blame him. Living by the sea with a job he loves and great friends, there isn’t a lot for Nicholai to worry about in life. Work can be physically hard but it’s simple with little hassle. Add that to the sound of the lapping waves and salty sea air and Nicholai just can’t help but enjoy his situation. Nicholai doesn’t anger quickly and is often the one trying to break up fights in the bar and on the docks. Something he can’t stand though is being compared to hippy surfers and swimmers. Yes, he has longer hair than the other sailors, but he keeps it well kept and short. He may be an easy going kind of guy, but Nicholai knows the value of hard work and how to throw a punch.
Besides working on the docks and ships, Nicholai knows how to work in the water, too. He isn’t a fast swimmer, but he has remarkable endurance and can stay in the water for an hour without needing a rest. Even though he can swim well, Nicholai doesn’t take advantage of the recreation very often. He just finds it rather boring if all you’re doing is swimming with no real goal in mind. When he finds himself goaded into going to the beach with his family or his co-workers, Nicholai finds some way to make a contest out of it. Often this involves racing someone down the edge of the beach or seeing who can hold their breath the longest. Even when he loses Nicholai is a good sport about it, all he cares about is actively doing something.
Finally, despite never owning his own, Nicholai is quite comfortable around Pokémon. He’s exposed to them on a daily basis as sailors use their Pokémon to aid in the work. Nicholai has been shoulder to shoulder with Machoke loading a ship and right alongside Poliwhirl scrubbing off barnacles. A strong Pokémon working with a sailor is a formidable force and Nicholai has learned to respect that. It wasn’t the smartest thing ever when he challenged a Machoke in lifting the most crates. Strength isn’t the only thing Nicholai sees though and he has an eye for rare Pokémon. Seeing the vast collection Paul owns has shown him that’s there’s more than just strong Pokémon. After seeing how a Shuckle can shrug off an attack from a Gyrados, Nicholai came to understand the depth of Pokémon and their trainers. Nicholai is intent on having the strongest Pokémon, but he’s open to the use of lesser used Pokémon, too.
and I shall move the world
Biography:
Coming from two different backgrounds and lifestyles, it was only by chance that Abram and Rebecca met. A man of the sea, Abram manned a small ship with a crew of only two other men. The three men lived off the boat and only came ashore to sell what they had caught, sometimes for quite the handsome sum. While Abram was out at sea living an adventurous life, Rebecca lived at home with her father and worked in his jewelry store. The jewelry shop was small though and Rebecca lived a modest life. On one of the few days that Abram came back on land he happened to have business in Rebecca’s father’s jewelry shop; He had just come into possession of a big pearl and was intent on selling it for a profit. Rebecca found the sailor to be quite charming and Abram found the lady behind the counter attractive and sweet. One thing led to another and within a year the two were married.
The couple bought a small house on the edge of town in Cianwood just a short jaunt from the docks. Abram continued his living on the ocean, but he made sure to come back twice a week to see his wife. They had their first son, Jean, who was quickly followed by Nicholai. With his second son, Abram decided to stay on land full time and started working at the docks. Nicholai and Jean would accompany their father to work on the weekends, but they had different interests while there. Jean loved to board the boats with his father when he inspected them and climb all over the rigging. At first Nicholai was uncomfortable around the docks or the boats in them and he would cling to his father. In an attempt to get his son more accustomed and interested to this watery environment, Abram brought his son on a ship that was carrying cargo from far off Sinnoh. After seeing all the cool merchandise, Nicholai became addicted to seeing what came through the harbor.
There was a local collector named Paul that Nicholai came to know due to his frequency at the docks. It seemed at least once a month Paul came down to pick up some special delivery. When he came down to the docks, Nicholai tagged along with him knowing he was guaranteed to see something exotic and rare. Paul didn’t mind his little companion in the least, in fact he enjoyed showing off his belongings. Between his time with his father and visiting the collector, Nicholai became well acquainted with the harbor, the regular sailors, and the names of all the ships. Eventually he came to recognize which ships were coming from where and planned out his visits to coincide with certain ships coming to harbor.
Even though he had rarely ever gone out to sea, Nicholai had a deep fascination with it from all the stories the sailors told him. One sailor, called Black Eye Pete on account of him always having a black eye, had a dozen tales about various sea monster encounters. He spoke of Tentacruel the size of a house, Sharpedo biting a boat in two, and Wailord that swallows entire ships whole. Most everyone took these stories as tall tales, but Nicholai never got bored of hearing them. He’d plant himself atop a barrel and listen to Pete for an hour or more. Even if no one else believed the stories, Nicholai thought there was some truth to them. After Pete told him about a Seaking that had jumped clean over a sailboat just off the nearby Whirl Islands, Nicholai started fishing off the docks hoping to catch it. He never did.
It was an easy transition for both Nicholai and Jean to start working at the docks when they reached their teens. Jean started off as a mechanic working on ships as he had always loved the cranes and rigging on the ships and dock. When he turned 18 Jean joined a local fishing vessel and was in charge of operating its small crane that brought in the nets. When Jean joined that crew, Nicholai was too young to follow along. Instead Nicholai worked as a dock loader, mostly because he got to see all the cargo the ships were carrying hands on. In a short time he got stronger from all the heavy lifting as well as nimble on the ships. Nicholai could walk along the edge of a ship with a crate under both arms and not lose his balance.
As he was loading up some produce on a ship at the end of the pier, Nicholai caught wind of a dispute breaking out. A swimmer in the water was blocking a ship from leaving and it was making the sailors on board irritated. It wasn’t anything new as there were swimmers everywhere between Cianwood and Olivine city and they had always caused the sailors trouble. This time it escalated to more than just words and the swimmer and a sailor sent out their Pokémon. Nicholai put down his load and watched the battle from a distance. He had seen a couple of battles before from the local gym trainers training and on TV, but this was a first at the docks for him. Some of the most interesting things that came through the docks were Pokémon as they came in from all over the world. In fact, the collector Paul had a few rare ones himself that he had shown to Nicholai. On top of that many of the sailors had their own Pokémon to help them out with their work and to deal with people like the swimmer.
A few years later a captain was looking for a crew of local men to help out on an expedition around the Whirl Islands. Unbeknownst to him, several sailors had recommended Nicholai to the captain due to his hardworking nature and nimble legs on a ship. When the captain approached him to offer him a spot Nicholai gladly accepted. The goal of the expedition he found out was to find and capture a purple and green Tentacruel that had been spotted in the area for some researchers. Several of the researchers were on board but the crew was mostly made of experienced sea hands. After a week of sailing around the islands there had been no sighting of the Pokémon. During an evening after they had set anchor, one of the sailors was on deck tossing out waste from the kitchen when he saw a greenish glow coming up from below the surface of the water. As he leaned over the railing to get a closer look, the Tentacruel burst out of the water and nearly sent the sailor into the water. At the sound of the crashing water and screaming sailor, everyone rushed out on deck to see the fearsome Pokémon. The captain was the first to react and sent out his Feraligatr to subdue the Tentacruel and soon several other sailors sent out their Pokémon to help surround it and keep it from escaping. Nicholai watched in awe as the captain’s Feraligatr battled with the Tentacruel and the command that the captain had over the situation. All the while all Nicholai could do was hunker behind the side of the ship.
The crew of the ship returned to port having successfully captured the Tentacruel and for a full day they all celebrated. As happy as Nicholai was about the success of the voyage, the nagging feeling of being of no help during the big moment kept creeping back. Nicholai started to lag behind at work and his father took notice of the situation. After explaining to his father what was going through his mind, Abram understood right away what he was talking about. Apparently his father had had a Walrein long ago that had helped him when he sailed to the north. When Nicholai asked why he didn’t have the Pokémon anymore, his father just told him that the sea can be harsh, to man and Pokémon alike. Abram didn’t think that should stop Nicholai though and told him he would be more than willing to let him train his own Pokémon.
While on one of his breaks Nicholai relayed the Tentacruel story to Black Eye Pete, proud to finally have his own story. It was only naturally that he also brought up the talk with his father and how he planned to train a Pokémon. There was a twinkle in Pete’s good eye when he heard the idea and started telling Nicholai of a far off place. He told him that at this place every Pokémon imaginable could be found, there were wondrous industries far ahead of Johto, but most of all was how People and Pokémon could converse freely through some unknown power. Nicholai grew wide eyed as Pete spun his tale and by the time he was finished he knew he had to know more. The first person he went to was Paul as he was his expert on all things foreign and exotic. Paul said he knew of the place and in fact had obtained several items and a Pokémon or two from there. If you could talk to Pokémon and even the rare ones could be found there, Nicholai knew he had to go.
Nicholai discussed leaving with his parents and while Rebecca was reluctant to see him go, Abram was thrilled at the idea of his son going on an adventure. A week later Abram had arranged some old sailor friends to get him started, but Nicholai would have to finish the journey. All the dock workers came out that day to see Nicholai off as they were losing a valuable member. Nicholai didn’t know how he’d get all the way there, but his family and friends had secured most of the voyage for him to get there. Next stop, Kairuu.
